Helping someone speak out PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 19 February 2010 09:26

Member Lesley Lyle CC came up with a great idea to help promote the Club, public speaking skills and help a local charity too.  So, we're offering one year’s free membership to someone who works for a charity or caring organisation.

Not only do the Members think this is a good idea, so does the Daily Echo who published details here.

Well done Lesley and we'll be pleased to hear from anyone wishing to take up the offer.

Meeting 13th January 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 24 January 2010 18:39

Despite the unusual absence of our President, Steve Osborne, members were inspired to new heights. Dan Webb filled the president's roles, as well as Toastmaster of the Evening and enthused over our efforts, with a theme of making change happen.  You'd never believe he's only performed TME role a couple of times!

Lots of people stepped up to new roles: Patricia Galbraith as timekeeper, Kem Galbraith as Sergeant at Arms, Kenny Jones as Evaluator, David Mitchell as Evaluator. This is always a delight to see as a new perspective is portrayed, and we all experience the importance of doing a good job, not to mention change and moving forward!

The ice-breaker speech from Fiona Knight had some great humour despite talking about conveyancing!
Soroosh Farid had interesting content in his second speech,  much to tell another time.
The winning speech by Melanie Austreng had a very powerful message about heart research;  when asked who had a close relative with heart disease, over 90% of us sat down.

Table topics, a delight as usual was led by Tony Peters,

David Singleton-Smith won best evaluator.

Four great speeches and lots of fun both in the Kenny James warm-up and during Table Topics meant that we ran overtime by nearly 15 minutes.

Best speech was won by Melanie Austreng who has really found her voice and enthralled all by talking about the cold, cold Canadian winters.  Tim Berry provided a well-written speech about Warren Buffet; David Singleton-Smith a beautifully worded, enthusiastic speech about Oscar Wilde and Shirley Thompson interacted well with the audience whilst explaining what Project Management is all about.

Lesley Lyle was Toastmaster and helped everyone feel comfortable with their evening with her elegant style.

Efe Ohwofasa was Table Topics master as well as Sargeant at Arms and wanted to know what people would do if they were a Government Ministers.  Some useful ideas were presented to the audience.  Clearly political potential amongst our Members, although Hannah Dykes, a visitor, won the best Table Topics award this meeting.

Robin Thirlwell won best evaluator with his clear, cogent consideration of David Singleton-Smiths speech.

Olga Taylor was Timekeeper, everyone cheered when she pointed out that one Table Topics participant should be made Minister because they had confined their speaking to just one minute.

It was announced that the Members monthly fee will increase for the first time some years in Spring 2010, by £2 per month to £11 per month.  Robin Thirlwell, our treasurer will provide details next year.

Four new Members joined on the night, Patricia and Kem Galbraith, Natalie Horne and Greg Tansell.  Welcome to you all, you've already contributed as guests with both your humour and existing speaking skills.

We also agreed to finance as a Club one new Member for one year that needs to improve their public speaking skills to benefit a charity.  The idea was from Lesley Lyle who is planning to help promote awareness too.

Note that were planning to meet in the bar on 23rd December at the usual time, not our usual meeting but a social gathering as the date is too close to Christmas.

We'll resume on Wednesday 13th January 2010 - book your speeches now, take roles.  If you do not know how to do this use the booking website (www.d71.org) - watch these videos.

Meeting 25th November 2009 PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 02 December 2009 15:37
An exceptional meeting was held on 25th November at our usual venue.  Several new members taking roles for the first time.   Well done to Robert Carter (Sargeant-at-Arms) and Tim Berry (Grammarian with the word dichotomy).

Despite numerous 'last minute' and during the actual meeting changes, Andrew Collinson moved the meeting forward serenely as our Toastmaster of the evening.  Andrew also provided a succinct 'Educational slot'.  Pointing out the effective use of short sentences and abbreviations to help flow in speeches amongst other helpful points.  Experience shows Andrew.

We benefitted from four speeches.  Soroosh Farid and Alex Langer with excellent 'IceBreaker' speeches.  Dan Webb talked about how to move out of one's comfort zone and then Lesley Lyle completed her Competent Communicator 'number 10' with a wonderfully inspiring speech about her journey through Toastmasters to date.  Lesley won the best speech of the evening.

Best Evaluator was Tony Peters who is beginning to make a habit of collecting such awards.  The other evaluators were David Singleton-Smith, Steve Osborne, Dave Hassell and Shirley Thompson.

Peter Roxburgh managed a favourite fruit themed Table Topics which was won by Kenny Jones.  Kenny successfully juggled a Mango to the floor on several occasions during his speech.

Peter did a fine job of keeping the audience involved and in effective transitions from one speaker to the next.

Great fun, great speeches and lots of enthusiasm.

Meeting on 28th October 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Gaby Pfeifer was our polite Sargeant at Arms for the evening, her first time in the role. The evening then benefitted from a warm-up by Peter Roxburgh who asked everyone what was the strangest thing they had eaten.  First time in the role I think for Peter, but he handled so well it could have been his 50th time.  Fiona Lennon definitely put people off eating white fruit in Brazil after she related an unfortunate incident.  Indeed, most us those present had a strange consumption story.  Well done Peter.

Only two speeches as our 3rd speaker went ill on the day - get well soon Efe.  But two excellent prepared speeches with a healthy theme.  Firstly, Dinah Smith helped everyone review their eating and drinking habits with a speech full of facts, then Lesley Lyle has everyone checking to ensure they have signed up to be Organ Donors:  www.transplant.org.uk

Dinah Smith was also Table Topics Master and chose the subject 'Favourites':
- Dave Hassall: favourite subject at school - maths and anything logical.  Great top see Dave back.
- Sam: favourite animal: campavara...is it rodent or pig?
- Kenny: (inspirational/famous) person - his son, very moving
- Greg: sport - surfing and other things he's not good at!
- David Singleton-Smith: TV program - Xfactor (or was it just Cheryl Cole)
- Olga Taylor: holiday - not too far away please, she loves Dorset.
- Zouche (we hope spelt correctly): hobby - studying architecture and he is an Architect; no that is dedication.

Tony Peters was Toastmaster of the evening.  His first time in the role and he added much humour and some well-managed transitions to the evening, a good job done with humour.
The atmosphere was enthusiastic and plenty of fun as we welcomed a number of guests again.

Login to www.d71.org and let us know you're coming to the next meeting.
